EVANSTON, Ill, February 14th, 2017/Manufacturers' News, Inc./-- New Hampshire factory employment increased for a second year in a row, according to manufacturing data collected by Manufacturers' News, Inc. (MNI), a publisher of industrial databases and directories for all fifty states. According to MNI, New Hampshire added 698 industrial jobs between November 2015 and November 2016, a 1% gain.

New Hampshire’s 2,416 manufacturers employ 81,535 in the state, reports MNI. This is the second year the state has added jobs, with total gains since November 2014 equaling 1,190 or 1.5%.

This year’s survey differs, however, in the wide range of New Hampshire sectors that added jobs, with nine of twenty sectors analyzed by MNI reporting healthy gains, while five reported losses and seven were unchanged. Last year, just five sectors added jobs.

New Hampshire ranks among the most business-friendly states in the Northeast region, and boasts a diverse manufacturing sector that draws from a highly-educated workforce,” says Tom Dubin, President of the Evanston, IL-based publishing company, which has been surveying industry since 1912. “However, improvements in the state’s infrastructure are badly in need, and global competition continues to put a dent in growth.”

New Hampshire industries reporting gains included chemical processing, up 11%; food products, up 10%; transportation equipment, up 8.3%; primary metals, up 8%; textiles/apparel, up 3.4%; lumber/wood, up 2.6%; and rubber/plastics, up 1%.

In addition, electronics, the state’s second-largest sector, grew by 1% to 11,027 jobs, and third-ranked medical/instruments also added 1% to 8,643.

New Hampshire’s industrial sector saw several positive announcements over the year, with BAE Systems’ plans to expand hiring at its Nashua facility; NSA Industries’ announcement that it will open a machining plant at an idled paper mill in Groveton; and Vermont-based Revision Military’s plans to expand to New Hampshire. In addition, Hitchiner Manufacturing Co. and Dayton Dynamics, both in Milford, reported expansions.

The first-ranked industrial machinery sector led losses, with a 2.1% decline to 13,492 jobs. Other losses included paper products, down 12%; printing/publishing, down 11%; stone/clay/glass, down 2.7%; and fabricated metals, down 1.2%.

New Hampshire industrial businesses announcing closures included Nashua Corp., which shuttered its Merrimack location, and firearms company Heckler & Koch, which plans to move its Newington operations to Georgia in the coming year.

City data collected by MNI shows Manchester remains the state’s top city by industrial employment, with 7,578 jobs, down 1.9% over the past year. Employment in second-ranked Nashua was virtually unchanged at 5,149 jobs, and fell 1.4% in Londonderry to 4,082. Employment in fourth-ranked Hudson remained steady at 4,012 industrial jobs, while manufacturing jobs in fifth-ranked Portsmouth grew by 4.2% to 3,504.
