Nevada Industrial Job Growth Gains Momentum

EVANSTON, Ill, January 31st, 2017/Manufacturers' News, Inc./-- Nevada manufacturing employment inched up for a fifth straight year, and grew at a faster rate than any year since the recession, according to the 2017 Nevada Manufacturers Directory®, an industrial database and directory published by Manufacturers' News, Inc. (MNI) Evanston, IL. According to MNI’s database of manufacturers, Nevada added 1,845 jobs between November 2015 and November 2016, a 3.2% gain.

Nevada is home to 1,791 manufacturers employing 58,097. Manufacturing employment in the state has grown steadily since November of 2011, reports MNI, adding 4,396 jobs or 8.2% over the five-year span.

Nevada boasts top-notch infrastructure, abundant natural resources as well as competitive incentive programs, and the establishment of Tesla, Hyperloop, and Faraday Future shows the state’s industrial sector is serious about reinventing itself,” says Tom Dubin, President of the Evanston, IL-based publishing company, which has been surveying industry since 1912. “However, like many states across the nation, global competition and a strong dollar continue to affect exports.”

MNI projects Nevada will likely see increased growth in the coming years following the completion of Tesla’s “gigafactory” in Reno, as well as at Hyperloop’s new manufacturing facility in North Las Vegas. Other manufacturing companies announcing new operations in Nevada include electric car company Faraday Future, which is in the process of establishing a facility in North Las Vegas, and window manufacturer Deceunick North America, which broke ground on its first U.S. facility in Fernley.

Healthy gains were recorded across multiple industries in Nevada, reports MNI, and included primary metals, up 12%; lumber/wood, up 10%; stone/clay/glass, up 5.5%; paper products, up 4.7%; electronics, up 2.8%; and food products, up 2.5%.

The fabricated metals sector, which ranks second in the state for number of manufacturing workers, grew by 7% to 5,629 jobs. Employment in metal mining, the state’s top-ranking sector by industrial employment, held steady at 6,656 workers.

Losses were reported in the chemical processing sector, which declined by 5.3% following layoffs at Olin Corp.’s chemicals plant in Henderson. The rubber/plastics sector also posted a loss, down 2% over the year.

City data collected by MNI shows Las Vegas remains the state’s top city by industrial employment, with 17,842 jobs, up 3.5% over the past year. Employment in second-ranked Reno held steady at 9,203 jobs, as was also unchanged in third-ranked North Las Vegas, which accounts for 4,417 manufacturing jobs. Henderson ranks fourth with 4,164 industrial workers, up 3% over the year, while Sparks ranks fifth with 4,311, up 1.2%.
