EVANSTON, Ill, January 10th, 2018/Manufacturers' News, Inc./-- Minnesota manufacturing employment growth accelerated over the past year, reports MNI (Manufacturers' News, Inc.) Evanston, IL. According to industrial data collected by MNI, Minnesota added 3,285 jobs between October 2016 and October 2017, a gain of one percent – more than double the increase reported over the 2015-2016 survey period.

Minnesota is home to 8,825 manufacturers employing 469,296. This is the sixth straight year the state has added jobs, reports MNI, with the state’s industrial workforce growing by nearly 20,000 workers since October of 2011.

“With a robust economy, abundant capital funding, an educated workforce, and sharp focus on technology and innovation, Minnesota has a lot to offer manufacturers, especially those seeking highly-skilled labor,” says Tom Dubin, President of the Evanston, IL-based publishing company, which has been surveying industry since 1912. “However, high business costs and global competition continue to temper growth.”

Industrial job gains in Minnesota were led by the food processing sector, which grew by 1.2% and currently ranks as the state’s top industry by factory employment with 68,519 jobs.

Employment in second-ranked industrial machinery held steady at 67,874 workers, reports MNI, while third-ranked medical instruments/related products also remained virtually unchanged at 47,261 workers.

MNI recorded employment increases in numerous other industries, including chemicals, up 4.3%; furniture/fixtures, up 2.6%; transportation equipment, up 2.1%; and stone/clay/glass, up 1.6%.

Employment in most remaining sectors remained stable, while decreases were reported in primary metals, down 2.8%; and textiles/apparel, down 2.5%.

A number of Minnesota manufacturers reported expansions over the year, and included Pepin Manufacturing in Wabasha; farm equipment manufacturer Geringhoff in St. Cloud; contract manufacturer MDI in Hibbing; and L & M Radiator, also in Hibbing. In addition, C6 Composites LLC established a new carbon composite facility in Roseville; and Valley Natural Foods broke ground on a meat processing plant in Northfield.

Industrial locations in Minnesota announcing closures include Imperial Plastics, which shuttered its Mankato facility, and Logic PD, which closed its Montevideo plant.

MNI reports Minnesota’s manufacturing job gains were concentrated in the state’s central regions, with industrial employment up 1.6% in West Central Minnesota to 39,583 jobs, and up 1% in the East Central region to 242,052. Southeast Minnesota also posted a gain, up 1.8% to 119,299 workers. Manufacturing employment declined 2.8% in Southwest Minnesota to 31,822 jobs, and fell 1% in both the Northeast and Northwest regions of the state to 19,126 and 17,414 jobs, respectively.

City data collected by MNI shows Minneapolis remains the state’s top city by industrial employment, with 57,322 jobs, up a half percent over the year. Second-ranked St. Paul accounts for 38,419 jobs, down 1%, while third-ranked Eden Prairie accounts for 11,299, down 2.5%. Bloomington industrial jobs rose 2.8% over the year to 11,893 workers, while Rochester jobs climbed a half percent to 11,441.
