Delaware continues to see its manufacturing sector improve,” says Tom Dubin, President of the Evanston, IL-based publishing company, which has been surveying industry since 1912. “The state’s business friendly environment and central location along the Atlantic Coast have been a draw for a variety of enterprises.”

Bright spots for the state included the opening of Bloom Energy’s fuel cell manufacturing facility in Newark; the expansion of Johnson Controls’ facility in Middletown; and Kraft Foods’ plans to expand its Kool-Aid facility in Dover, relocating production from a factory in Mexico.

MNI reports Delaware’s largest manufacturing sectors all gained jobs over the year. The state’s top industrial sector for jobs remains chemicals manufacturing, accounting for 11,625 jobs, up 3.1% over the year. Second-ranked food products accounts for 9,130 jobs, up a half percent, while employment in instruments/related products increased 2.8%, with the sector currently representing 2,611 of the state’s manufacturing jobs.

Losses were seen in paper products, down 11.5%; electronics, down 5.3%; rubber/plastics, down 5.3%; fabricated metals, down 2.6%; and industrial machinery and equipment, down 1.8%.

According to MNI, Wilmington remains the state’s top city for manufacturing employment, home to 11,631 jobs, up 3.8% over the year. Second-ranked Newark accounts for 5,331 jobs, with employment down 3.6% over the past twelve months. New Castle is home to 3,251 industrial jobs, down 1% over the year. Georgetown accounts for 2,521 jobs, down 2.1%, while Milford is home to 2,260 jobs, down 1.6%.
