EVANSTON, Ill, September 21st, 2017/Manufacturers' News, Inc./-- Colorado added manufacturing jobs for a seventh straight year, according to data collected by Manufacturers' News, Inc. (MNI), publisher of industrial databases and directories for all fifty states. MNI reports Colorado gained 2,308 manufacturing jobs from June 2016 to June 2017, an increase of 1%.

Currently, Colorado is home to 6,272 manufacturers employing 215,001. MNI data shows the state has made significant strides since the end of the recession, adding more than 17,000 jobs, or about 9% to its industrial workforce since June of 2010.

Colorado gets high marks across a spectrum of site selection factors. The state boasts a highly-educated workforce, an abundance of capital, a robust economy and a focus on advanced manufacturing, all of which has boosted investment in its industrial sector,” says Tom Dubin, President of the Evanston, IL-based publishing company, which has been surveying industry since 1912. “However, global competition and a strong dollar continues to be a challenge.”

Recent data suggests Colorado should continue to see sustained growth in its industrial sector as Lockheed Martin makes progress on its $340 million satellite factory in Denver, and Ball Corporation completes an expansion of its Aerospace Manufacturing Center in Westminster. In addition, Columbus-based EWI recently opened an innovation center in Loveland, which will bring more advanced manufacturing technologies to the state.

Employment gains over the past year were led by the food processing industry, which added 2% to its workforce over the year, and accounts for the most industrial jobs in Colorado, employing 26,990.

Additional gains were spread out across multiple industries in Colorado, reports MNI, and included lumber/wood, up 9.3%; furniture/fixtures, up 7%; stone/clay/glass, up 4.1%; chemicals, up 3.4%, and electronics, up 1.3%.

These were offset by losses in the oil/gas extraction sector, which dipped 4.1%. Other Colorado industries reporting declines included instruments/related products, which declined 2.7% after Baxter International shuttered its facility in Englewood, and industrial machinery, down 1.7% following the closure of SMA Solar Technology in Denver.

MNI’s regional data shows Colorado’s job gains were spread out across most of the state. Employment in Southeast Colorado rose 2% over the year to 6,399 jobs, and climbed 1.8% in Northwest Colorado to 62,705. The state’s Northeast region added 1% to its industrial workforce, and now accounts for 139,179 jobs. The Southwest region was the only to lose jobs, down 1.7% to 6,718 workers.

City data collected by MNI shows Denver remains the state’s top city by industrial employment, with 42,332 jobs, followed by Colorado Springs, with 16,619; and Englewood, with 14,221. Cities reporting employment gains included Denver, up 2%; Fort Collins, up 1.6%; and Aurora, up 1.1%. Colorado Spring and Englewood lost jobs, down 3.3% and 2.9%, respectively.
